Ellis County followed much the same trajectory as the surrounding areas in North Texas during the middle of the 19th century. With plenty of open space to occupy, settlers came and established a thriving agricultural economy in Midlothian and the surrounding region. Cotton and cattle dominated the landscape when the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railroad came through the area, although that would all shift in the next century.
Midlothian’s economy is mostly founded on industry, as many of the town’s nearly 20,000 residents work in one Midlothian’s many industrial centers. The residents of Midlothian live on the outskirts of the Metroplex, but they still have access to important services like LASIK eye surgery. LASIK eye surgery can be very helpful for Midlothian residents that struggle with blurry vision, and the region has numerous eye care centers that can provide these services.
The Austin Escarpment first brought industry to Midlothian and Ellis County, as cement companies dug quarries and set up shop in the town. Texas Industries was the first cement company to arrive in Midlothian, in 1959, and it expanded its activity in Midlothian in the late 1960s to help with the construction of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Today, Texas Industries operates five cement kilns and employs 260 workers, and the company has been joined by Ash Grove Texas and Holcim in the cement market.
